One would not think that learning to breathe would be a thing. But it is! I treat patients regularly who breathe shallowly and clench their jaw throughout the day. They present with headaches, chest tightness, neck and shoulder pain, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping- the list goes on and on.
Your breath ( or how you breathe) has a direct relationship with the balance and regulation of your nervous system. Improper breathing can contribute to the deregulation of your nervous system- creating blocks to true healing.
Alternate Nostril Breathing- this is something I even do with my Pediatric Patients.
*Position your right hand by bending your pointer and middle fingers into your palm, leaving your thumb, ring finger, and pinky extended.
*Inhale and exhale to begin.
*Close off your right nostril with your thumb.
*Inhale through your left nostril.
*Close off your left nostril with your ring finger.
*Open and exhale through your right nostril.
*Inhale through your right nostril.
*Close off your right nostril with your thumb.
*Open and exhale through your left nostril.
*Inhale through your left nostril, and repeat as above.
Overtime, work your way up to 6-10 rounds of this breathing pattern- being sure to take a break and rest if you feel lightheaded.
